For forty plus years, when someone finds out I’m a lawyer and asks for my card, I give them one and always say “I hope you never need me.” And I mean it.
Unfortunately, bad motor vehicle crashes and bad work accidents happen…causing serious and permanent injuries to innocent people. And that’s when we can help. We cannot undo the injuries, but we can help our clients navigate the complex legal process, enforce their legal remedies guaranteed by Florida law and recover all the benefits they are entitled to by law…no more, no less!
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1977 that lawyer advertising is a guaranteed constitutional right under The First Amendment/freedom of speech. And the dam broke.
How Florida lawyers and law firms advertise is a choice that each lawyer or law firm has to make.
Years ago I chose more of an “under the radar” philosophy and I still stand by it today. We advertise some on TV, billboards, etc., just to remind the thousands of people that I’ve helped and represented over the years in mostly central, north central and north Florida that I’m still here and helping seriously injured (or worse) folks. And I have other good lawyers in my law firm who help me help others.

Some may say that “word of mouth” advertising is not very effective anymore, but I’m here to tell you that it is! Probably 80-90% of my new injured clients have been referred to me by my happy past clients, their family members or friends or many others.
When our plumber retired, my wife didn’t look for a new plumber in the Classified Ads of the newspaper or in the Yellow Pages. She called her friends and got their recommendations before she hired a new plumber…and he’s really good.
Nothing against lawyer advertising that posts clients’ names and faces and big numbers on TV and billboards, but I’m just not comfortable doing that. And I believe that is personal information that most clients would rather keep personal. Part of their right to privacy.
Certainly, some prospective new injured clients may want to know about the lawyer’s or law firm’s “Case Results” when making the decision “to hire or not to hire.” That’s a fair question.
And they can readily find my law firm’s Case Results on our website HightowerandHightower.com. In fact, I don’t mind anonymously (by using only clients’
initials) posting our larger recoveries for seriously injured clients during calendar year 2025:
And lesser injuries cases resolve in the five figure range ($10,000 – $99,000).
I’ll end this article with what I started with. “I hope you never need me.” Drive attentively, safely and defensively. Work safely. And then you probably won’t.
